Distillation tower of Ammonia Recovery Unit (ARU) of Ammonia Plant

Post by BhupenMehta »

We are operating 1100 MTPD gas based ammonia plant. ARU Unit is installed to recover the ammonia from ammonia liquid of PGR unit and loop offgases recovery unit.
Bubble cap trays are installed in Distillation tower of ARU.
Do any have packed bed in Distillation tower of ARU?

Hi, Yes-both pall rings and structured packing have been used for both absorber and still. Control of still reflux requires that the TE used be in the right location so that the temperature vs. concentration profile is steep in the rectifying section at that location and I imagine with bubble cap trays tuning is easier due to the relatively high inventory at the TE location but for sure packed bed stills are widely used with good results. It is possible to make strong aqua in the absorber (29.6% NH3) that can be sold but to do so, I think, requires trays with cooling coils similar to those used in HNO3 production.

Dear Mr. Bhupen,
What is the reason you are searching for packed bed, Bubble cap tray are more efficient than packed bed.
Also Easy to operate.
Even if there is some concentration upset that can be easily manage in bubble cap.
Any specific reason for looking packed bed.
