Hi,
I'm no expert but a short answer would be that the choice of packing is a balance between surface area for mass transfer and dP which determines approach to flooding as well as approach to the lower loading limit. Flooding
concern is obvious while lower loading limit is a decline in performance due to the liquid just "falling" through the column with reduced mass transfer efficiency. I use the packing factor method
pall 1" pall 2" structured IMTP 40 IMTP 50 IMTP 70
alpha 0.15 0.06 0.06 0.12 0.06 0.06
beta 0.16 0.12 0.15 0.14 0.12 0.12
packing factor 42 22 20 24 18 12
Then with a bit of arithmetic it's possible to plot the operating point (on a log-log scale) relative to flooding, higher loading limit and lower loading limit'
