Coating of Reformer Refractory Material

Dear All,
I am currently working as an operations Engineer in Haldor Topsoe Ammonia Plant. I have recently gone through a paper of coating Primary Reformer Refractory for reducing Convection Coil fouling. Does anyone here has similar experience of applying this protection coat. If Yes please share the details and the service provider available in South Asian Region.

Hi Qazi,
For ceramic fiber linings, where fluegas velocity is high fibers can be carried into the convection bank and get caught in finned coils. If this is your situation, rigidizer can be sprayed on to entrap the fibers. There are a number of commercial products available for this purpose and I think many are silicate salts. Experience has shown that recoating is required every few years

Dear sir,
We painted the radiant furnace with a high emissivity coating to ¨fix¨ the loose refractory material that fouled the radiant tubes. Problem is that the paint will not last for long. You will have to repaint form time to time. With a high efficiency coating you need less fuel, thus the gas speed at burner tip is less and there will be less erosion.

Hi

Mr. Schulz is correct, with a high emissivity coating you can reach more than just entrapping the fibers.
It helps to debottleneck the unit, increase capacity, cut emissions and increase tube life.
Some coatings have a longer life than others, ours provide 10+ years of protection and higher efficiency in many units.

Radiant section is located in lower part of the furnace where the burners and catalyst tubes are located. Convection section is located in the upper side adjacent to the radiant section. first of cleaning to be done by sandblasting. Coating to be done with Zirconia this material was characterized by very high content of zirconia and imparts high resistance to aggressive attacking environments typically encountered at high temperature. The composition is as follows
1. Zirconium 62.97%,
2. Aluminium 1.63%,
3. Calcium 1.37%,
4. Magnesium 0.34%,
5. Silicon 32.06%,
6. Titanium 0.25%,
7. Boron 1.1% and
8. Fluorine 0.25%.
Coating thickness can be applied differently, ranging 1 mm, etc.
