Type of HP Ammonia Pumps

Both Reciprocating and Centrifugal type pumps are possible options for HP Ammonia Pumps. What are the selection criteria based on your experience?

Yes both (reciprocating and centrifugal) are suitable candidate for High pressure Ammonia pumping. But reciprocating is good for energy efficiency and bad due high/ frequent maintenance. Maintenance also poses risk during hand over (operation) and maintenance to the plant crew along with loss of ammonia to environment.
If plant capacity is large, high capacity centrifugal pumps are better option due to its trouble free (mostly, if installed & commissioned properly) operation.

The main difference between centrifugal and reciprocating pumps is that centrifugal pump is one of the rotary pumps which used kinetic energy of impeller whereas reciprocating pump is a positive displacement type pump which is forced by piston. Both having merits and demerits .Reciprocating pumps are more suitable for low volume and high pressure.
In case of ammonia high pressure pumps the centrifugal pumps are available up to 300 kg/cm2 and high flow., e.g.-140-200 t/hr. capacity with low maintenance cost., e.g. M/S. Ebara, Japan made HP ammonia pump with less maintenance and less space for pump but same capacity you have taken e.g. Uraca H.P. Ammonia Pump about triple space is required for same capacity pump and more maintenance e.g. ‘O-rings packing problems and tandem valve passing etc. No pulsation in the flow in centrifugal pumps. No relief valve is required. Relief valve also passing problem. The PSV in discharge line also passing problems due to jerks in reciprocating pump. Power consumption is also low in centrifugal pumps. No discharge accumulator is required in centrifugal pumps.

In addition, the choice of HP Ammonia pump should also be based on the pump`s performance and efficiency curve with respect to the design/rated capacity of that plant.
Maintainability/serviceability and reliability determination through the equipment life cycle cost analysis can provide a fruitful guide to an appropriate choice.
